Does an air fryer produce smoke?

Air fryers produce very little smoke under normal use, but they do produce some. The amount of smoke depends mainly on the following factors:

1. Operating principle determines low smoke production: Air fryers cook food using high-speed circulating hot air, usually requiring no or only a small amount of oil. A small amount of the food's own oil will seep out at high temperatures, but due to the sealed design and the absence of an open flame, the amount of smoke generated is far lower than with traditional frying. Some models are also equipped with oil filters or air ducts to further reduce smoke escape.

2. Food type affects smoke production:
High-fat foods (such as chicken wings and pork belly): may release oil at high temperatures, producing a small amount of smoke.

Low-fat or oil-free foods (such as French fries and vegetables): produce almost no smoke.

3. Temperature and time control: If the temperature is set too high (e.g., exceeding 200℃) or the cooking time is too long, the oil in the food may overheat and decompose, producing a small amount of smoke. This problem can be avoided by adjusting the parameters appropriately.

4. Usage Recommendations to Reduce Potential Oil Fumes

Ventilation Environment: It is recommended to use it near a range hood or in a well-ventilated area, especially when cooking high-fat foods.

Cleaning and Maintenance: Regularly clean the frying basket and oil filter to prevent residual grease from being repeatedly heated, producing odors or oil fumes.

Choose a High-Quality Model: Some high-end models (such as Philips' double-layer oil-locking design) can effectively separate grease and reduce oil fumes.

5. Comparison with Ovens and Deep Fryers

Traditional Deep Frying: Large amounts of oil boil at high temperatures, producing significant oil fumes.

Oven: Oil fumes may be produced when baking meat at high temperatures for extended periods.

Air Fryer: Lowest overall oil fume production, but caution is still needed when cooking high-fat foods.
